Predator: Badlands

So I pretend to only ironically like the Predator movies, but they're actually a lot of fun, and this one is no exception. Usually, I'm always saying "Predator is such a dick!" so it was interesting to have a predator protagonist here. Other than that, the plot is pretty standard, like scrappy band of outsiders come together and save the day. The Predator culture seems to be mostly about toxic masculinity, although it's hard to say bc you rarely see a female one at all. The Predator community in this movie seemed like a rural outpost maybe because humans were so advanced they had great cyborgs and the Predators were living in like a Wild West town on their planet, when they're usually more advanced than humans. Anyway, here's my ranking of Predator movies I've seen so far: Predator Predator 2 Predators Prey and Badlands about a tie Predator 4 Alien vs. Predator - a terrible movie even though I love both franchises. It just really drags, which yo...

Maid in Manhattan (contains spoilers, sort of)

This was one I'd never seen and it's kind of mediocre but at least it's from before the era where Netflix & Co started making all the Hallmark knockoffs. There's little worse than being 20 minutes into a movie and realizing it's not funny at all, just saccharine and weirdly about how women shouldn't have jobs and should at most run a family pumpkin patch or something. Anyway, this has it's cute moments and I'm always here for a comedy of errors. It seemed silly that there was this whole narrative where she has to get him to forgive her for secretly being a maid. Like, isn't he the problem if that's a problem? Also it felt weird that he was a Republican and that was a non-issue, but it was a different time. Anyway, this isn't the best of that era but also not bad. Like if you want something cozy and unchallenging to relax with, why not?

Books That Should Be Movies, Part 2

Any Agatha Christie book that isn't a movie yet! Because I would honestly watch them all. It's amazing how she kills it at the classic murder mysteries she's most known for but also at spy thrillers and that kind of thing. So yeah someone go through and find all the ones that aren't movies yet and get on it.

The Woman in Cabin 10

Fun little thriller. Technically, it's sort of an Agatha-Christie-style whodunnit, but it doesn't completely live up to that genre bc there aren't really red herrings or other suspects. Still, I had fun with it. Could've been a little twistier but what's there works.

Ghosted

This is a cute action romcom. As in like fun, light entertainment, not hilarious laughs. It has some cute little gets about modern dating and pretty standard action sequences, plus some nice low-level twists. As an aside, there aren't many female-driven spy thrillers even now. My top ones are still Spy and The Spy Who Dumped Me.

Wag the Dog (partial spoiler)

This was kind of different from what I expected, like based on the premise of someone making up a fake war to get reelected I thought it would be somewhat sillier. Maybe it felt too close to reality these days. It is funny and creative, but the plot is kind of a plateau or episodic, like it never really comes to a peak. The ending is surprisingly dark and IMO not quite a match for the rest of it.

The Long Kiss Goodnight

Who knew this was gonna be a Christmas movie?! Glad I happened to watch it in season. Pretty typical midlist 90s Samuel L. Jackson thriller. Geena Davis is great in it, like you'd practically think she was 2 different actors. A couple minor twists but leans a little more towards drama. Obviously, there are a lot of movies about assassins trying to leave their old lives behind, but the amnesia aspect makes this one feel more original even today.

Addicted to Love

A classic Meg Ryan romcom I'd never seen! Obviously her and Matthew Broderick's behavior stalking their respective exes is totally insane and illegal, but I had fun with it. That's the nice part about movies from that era, daring to have really crazy plots. Trigger warning: cockroaches!
