Identity (spoiler alert!)

This movie contains my absolute least favorite plot twist, where it was all a dream, delusion, hallucination, whatever. Unlike The Ward, which is similar and the only John Carpenter movie I've ever not liked, it's not even really a twist in this movie, because they're showing you all along all this blahblah about some guy with multiple personalities. Hard to be invested when you know all along no one is real and nothing matters. It's a shame because a bunch of different people stranded at a motel is a nice setup, but I wouldn't recommend this one.

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (Part 4)

Ha this movie is not great but if you've watched the series this far, it will seem fantastic bc it's not complete trash like parts 1-3 (although, like them, it requires a multiverse to cover over the plotholes and spends the beginning of the movie doing a lengthy montage of scenes from the parts before). It's kind of an unwitting horror comedy with such bad dialogue it's funny, like when the guy getting murdered keeps yelling "He's killing me!" over and over. The random sexy adult twins (wearing matching outfits as all adult twins do) had kind of a porno vibe. Crystal Lake must have the world's best PR department since people keep going on vacation there in spite of the constant murders.

F Marry Kill

This is pretty much for people who liked Heart Eyes Killer (so also me). It's not as snappy but it's a quick fun watch and I found the resolution more satisfying than in HEK. Just a pleasant little horror romcom and also a whodunnit, and there are never enough of those! Successful red herrings included.

Zootopia 2

Zootopia is one of my favorite recent(ish) kids' movies, so the sequel could've been really disappointing. Luckily it's not! The fun of it is not just the cute world building but that it's basically an action movie with a typical mildly twisty heist/conspiracy plotline, but done by cutesy animals. If you liked the first one, you'll probably like this a little less but plenty for a sequel.

Materialists (some spoilers)

I went in expecting this to be more of a romantic comedy, but it definitely veers drama at times. Still enjoyed it though and there is some humor. There was kind of a disconnect for me with the Pedro Pascal plotline bc his character has all these hopes and worries that are discussed but then he just flies to Iceland and is never mentioned again. The main appeal for me was a look at the career of a high-end matchmaker and that was definitely fascinating, although who knows how realistic. Not that it matters! Enjoyable but less light and fun than expected.

Bugonia (vague spoilers)

This one is weird AF but pretty good. The main protagonist will seem familiar as an incel conspiracy theorist who got radicalized on the internet, but it's twistier than that. I did have moments of worrying it was turning into a torture porno after he captures the "alien" but luckily it didn't go too far in that direction. I saw the twist ending coming, but it works. There were moments where the pacing was a little weak, like just more scenes of someone being held captive in a basement without things progressing or the ending itself being so long. I don't really agree with listing it as a comedy but there are amusing moments.

Predator: Badlands

So I pretend to only ironically like the Predator movies, but they're actually a lot of fun, and this one is no exception. Usually, I'm always saying "Predator is such a dick!" so it was interesting to have a predator protagonist here. Other than that, the plot is pretty standard, like scrappy band of outsiders come together and save the day. The Predator culture seems to be mostly about toxic masculinity, although it's hard to say bc you rarely see a female one at all. The Predator community in this movie seemed like a rural outpost maybe because humans were so advanced they had great cyborgs and the Predators were living in like a Wild West town on their planet, when they're usually more advanced than humans. Anyway, here's my ranking of Predator movies I've seen so far: Predator Predator 2 Predators Prey and Badlands about a tie Predator 4 Alien vs. Predator - a terrible movie even though I love both franchises. It just really drags, which yo...
